Preparing for DIY Installation of Hardwood and Luxury Vinyl Flooring

1. Choose the Right Materials

At Bell Hardwood Floors, we can help you select the perfect materials for your project. For hardwood installations, consider the type of wood that best suits your lifestyle and the level of traffic in your home. For luxury vinyl, decide between tiles and planks depending on the area and the desired aesthetic. Each type of flooring has its benefits, and our experts can guide you through the selection process to ensure you have the best fit for your home.

2. Gather Your Tools and Supplies

Successful DIY flooring installation depends on having the right tools and supplies. For hardwood and luxury vinyl flooring, you will need:

Measuring tape
Utility knife (for vinyl)
Saw (for hardwood)
Level
Tapping block and pull bar
Spacers
Adhesive (for glue-down installations)
Underlayment (if required)

Bell Hardwood Floors carries all these tools and more, providing a convenient one-stop shop for all your DIY flooring needs.

Step-by-Step Guide to Installing Hardwood and Luxury Vinyl

3. Acclimate Your Flooring

Before installation, it's crucial to let your hardwood or luxury vinyl flooring acclimate to your home's environment for at least 48 hours. This process helps prevent warping and buckling by allowing the material to adjust to the temperature and humidity levels.

4. Prepare the Subfloor

Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, level, and structurally sound. Any imperfections can affect the final result, so fill in gaps or sand down high spots as needed. For concrete subfloors, check moisture levels to avoid potential flooring damage.

5. Installation Techniques

For hardwood:

Start laying the boards at the longest, most visible straight wall.
Use spacers along the walls to allow for expansion.
Stagger the ends of the boards to avoid alignment of seams, which can compromise the structure.

For luxury vinyl:

Begin at the center of the room to ensure a balanced layout.
For peel-and-stick tiles, carefully align the edges and press down firmly.
For click-lock vinyl, fit the pieces together snugly without adhesive.

Refinishing Your Hardwood Floors

6. Sanding and Sealing

If you’re refinishing your hardwood floors, sand them down to remove the old finish and smooth out imperfections. After sanding, apply a sealer to protect the wood and enhance its natural beauty. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the best results.
