Wood Floors: What to Expect
One of the leading causes of customer dissatisfaction with their wood floor is it does not live up to their expectations. No matter how experienced our installers are or what the quality of the wood is there are some things you should expect:
- Wood is not a monochromatic product: Wood, as a natural product, will vary from piece to piece. Remember it is not fabricated; it is milled from a tree. It will have grain and color variations that are consistent with the grade and species of flooring selected. Whether it’s a solid or engineered hardwood floor.
- Wood floors will indent: In spite of the term “hardwood” wood flooring will indent under high heel traffic, furniture moving, dropping of heavy objects, and even from pet’s claws. No finish that is applied will prevent scratches and dents.
- Wood floors may crack between the boards: Although your new floor may start tight together, as a natural product it will continue to absorb and release moisture. This natural process will cause flooring to expand and contract from season to season, which results in some cracks between boards in the floor. Some stain colors, such as white, will show this process more than others. It’s recommended with either solid or engineered hardwood that a humidifier be used in the space the floor is in. This will help minimize separation and cracks, but will not prevent them.
- Bell Hardwood Floors is NOT responsible: For the existence or correction of perceived imperfections in wood, which is the result of the wood’s intrinsic character. Wood is a product of nature; it will continue to react to temperature, humidity, and sunlight after installation. It may also move, shrink, crack or fade. Bell Hardwood Floors shall not guarantee any size or grade of hardwood flooring against color, cupping, buckling, warping, shrinkage, and termite or beetle infestation.
Your floor is never duplicated; it is truly a unique and custom floor of your own.
Refinishing what to expect
- Little to no dust, our sanding equipment is hooked up to a vacuum system.
- Baseboards may get scuffed during the sanding process; paint touch up not included.
- Oil base finishes can take anywhere from 8-12 hours to dry.
- Water base urethane will take 5-8 hours to dry.
Maintenance coat:
A maintence coat is a light buffing of the floor, clean, vacuum, and apply 1 coat of finish. This process will not take out any deep scratches, dents, worn grey areas, line from area rugs, or discoloration from ultra violet light.
We recommend getting a maintence coat for residential homes every 3-5 years, however some may be able to go longer. A maintence coat is a good idea when you begin getting some light scratches in the floor or notice some wear areas in the finish, typically in high traffic areas of the home.
