Luxury vinyl flooring is one of the most popular choices for homeowners in Ammon, ID due to its durability, appearance, and affordability. But one of the most common questions during luxury vinyl plank flooring installation is: do I need special underlayment?

Why Underlayment Matters

Underlayment is a thin layer placed between your subfloor and your new luxury vinyl floor. It may seem like a small detail, but the right underlayment plays a huge role in the overall performance of your floors.

Underlayment can:

Add cushioning for extra comfort underfoot
Improve sound absorption
Level minor subfloor imperfections
Increase thermal insulation
Prevent moisture buildup

Choosing the Right Underlayment

Not all luxury vinyl plank flooring requires a separate underlayment. Some resilient luxury vinyl planks come with attached padding, while others do not. If your product doesn’t include it, your installer will recommend one that suits your space and flooring type.

An underlayment can help prevent movement and noise for floating floors, such as many luxury vinyl tile styles. If your vinyl flooring is glued down, underlayment is generally unnecessary unless your subfloor is particularly uneven or moisture-prone.

Added Benefits for Busy Homes

Luxury vinyl flooring is already known for being a water-resistant option, but underlayment adds an additional layer of protection—especially in moisture-prone areas like kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

Underlayment also contributes to long-term comfort. If you’re wondering how to clean luxury vinyl plank floors, the process is easy, and with the right underlayment, your floor will continue to feel smooth and solid for years.
